Putin submitted a proposal to the Duma to denounce the Convention on Human Rights

Russian President Vladimir Putin submitted to the State Duma a draft law on the termination of international agreements of the Council of Europe in relation to Russia.

In the electronic database of the lower house of the parliament, it appears that the proposal to denounce the European Convention on the Suppression of Terrorism. A proposal on the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms was also presented. In addition, it is planned to terminate the European Charter of Local Self-Government and the European Social Charter and others – a total of 21 documents.

The termination of these documents in Russia will require, as stated in the bill, changes to the laws “On the State of Emergency”; and “On martial law”.

Russian authorities have repeatedly emphasized that Russian legislation contains all the necessary measures to respect the rights and freedoms of citizens and to fight terrorism.
