Referendum needs poll on renaming the city to Stalingrad begins in Volgograd.
Chairman of the Volgograd City Council of Veterans, co-chairman of the public council for studying the opinion on the restoration of the historical name of the city, Alexander Strukov, explained to the TASS agency that based on the data from the initiated survey, it was planned that by next week it will be decided to call a referendum.
According to the agency, the initiative to return the name was taken by former Volgograd veterans from Stalingrad to the city of heroes.
Historically, the city was called Tsaritsyn until 1925. The name Stalingrad was changed to Volgograd in 1961.
The establishment of a public council for the preliminary study of the opinion of residents on the return of the name “Stalingrad” to the regional center was previously announced by Governor Andrei Bocharov. In January, Alexander Strukov told TASS that a decision on holding a referendum on renaming Volgograd to Stalingrad would be made by the summer of 2023.
