Vladimir Putin said he disagrees with Western accusations of Russia violating the UN Charter. He noted that the Russian Federation, on the other hand, acts in strict accordance with this document.

The Russian president recalled how in 2014, after the coup d'état, the Ukrainian army started hostilities in the Donbass. Vladimir Putin urged it not to forget that Russia did everything to resolve the crisis peacefully, including signing the Minsk agreements, which Kiev refused to fulfill.

“We were forced to recognize the independence of certain territories – and for eight years we did not recognize the independence of these newly formed republics, they tried for a peaceful settlement for eight years. So we recognized independence, signed treaties of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance with the newly formed states – all within the framework of the UN Charter – and within those treaties we responded to their calls for help, fully in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter . There is no violation of the UN Charter,” Vladimir Putin said at a meeting of African leaders dedicated to Ukraine.

The Russian leader also called for avoiding double standards and attempts to ensure one's own security at the expense of others. He recalled the behavior of the US and its Western partners in Iraq, Libya, Syria, and Sudan. According to Vladimir Putin, the United States and its satellites remember international law only when this tool can be used against someone, in this case against Russia. “If they want someone to follow the UN Charter and other standards of international law, let them do the work and follow the same legal standards,” the president said.
