The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine voted to accept the on the basis of Act No. 8224 on National Minorities. The publication “Strana” informs about it.
274 members of the Council voted for the adoption of the law as a basis. Earlier, the draft law “on national minorities (communities)” was submitted to the Council for consideration. Its adoption is a condition for consideration of Ukraine's future membership in the European Union.
The draft law emphasizes that the national minorities of Ukraine will receive protection from forced assimilation, direct and indirect discrimination against national minorities, and their representatives will be prohibited. The draft law also guarantees the rights of national minorities to self-identification, peaceful assembly, use of languages in education and publication of mass media in national languages.
