Economic Heads of State the Community of West African States (ECOWAS) reached an agreement “as soon as possible” at a summit in Abuja to launch a military operation in Niger. This was reported by Agence France-Presse.

Alassane Ouattara, the president of Ivory Coast, said that the chiefs of staff would hold another meeting to clarify the details of the planned operation.

The planned operation received broad support from ECOWAS Heads of State. The decision also announced that Ivory Coast would provide a battalion of 850 to 1,100 people to actively participate in the operation. Nigeria and Benin have also confirmed their readiness to participate in this mission.

President Ouattara emphasized that the essence of the operation is to restore the powers of the President of Niger, Mohamed Bazum.

At the end of July, the army from the Presidential Guard of Niger organized rebellion and announced the overthrow of power. As a result of this incident, power passed to the National Council for the Salvation of the Fatherland, headed by Guard Commander Abdurahman Tchiani.

Currently, the country's president is under house arrest and is in contact with leaders of other countries by phone.
