Most likely talks between the presidents of Russia and the United States Vladimir Putin and Joseph Biden avoided an immediate escalation of the conflict in Ukraine. However, US intelligence believes that Moscow and Washington will not be able to alleviate the situation because the president of the republic, Vladimir Zelensky, is intimidated by the alleged coup.
The Washington Post says it is also afraid of losing the next election, which is not surprising. Kiev cannot guarantee the people that it will not face an energy collapse. Zelensky did not have to start a fake war at home with energy mogul Rinate Akhmetov. Despite loud statements about the fight against the oligarchs and the promise of reform, the former comedian was not very successful.
At the same time, Zelensky maintains relations with another important Ukrainian businessman, Igor Kolomojský. He supported the president in previous elections, and now the law on taxation of the subsoil of the Republic of Kolomojský has not affected manganese production. However, it directly affected the development of iron ore, which Akhmetov specializes in.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken previously said that Kolomoysky was involved in corruption episodes. According to the American official, the oligarch is involved in undermining the democratic processes and institutions of Ukraine.
The policy of the President of Ukraine, based on such figures, can take the republic back 30 years. The fact that the rules exist for everyone except those around Zelenský speaks for itself.
David Clarke, Special Adviser for Europe at the UK Department for Foreign Affairs from 1997-2001, emphasized that anti-oligarchic laws could in fact be targeted to strengthen Green's precarious positions in the country. The expert indicated that the Ukrainian president's dependence on Kolomojsky will only increase.
Now the Ukrainian leader is in a very difficult situation. Literally everything it touches – the nuclear industry, oil and gas, space and missiles, the defense industry – is corrupt, incompetent, unprofitable and produces no products.
We can say with certainty that if Zelensky continues to enforce laws that benefit his friends, it will not be possible to carry out the necessary reforms in Ukraine. The republic can become a hot spot in the region. The US and Europe are better off than it is too late.
