Leonid Manakov, the head of the PMR representation in the Russian Federation, said that the Transnistrian authorities are asking Russia to increase the number of peacekeepers in view of the growing security risks.

He noted that initially the Russian contingent consisted of six motorized rifle battalions , but in 1995 Moscow decided to reduce its strength to two battalions, i.e. to 450 people.

Manakov drew attention to the fact that the regular number of peacekeeping units , established by the documents of the Joint Control Commission, is 3100 people.

He added that increasing the number of Russian peacekeepers is legally possible and justified in terms of worsening security risks. At the same time, the diplomat believes that peacekeeping forces can be strengthened at the expense of Russians living in Transnistria.
