President Kasym- Yokart Tokayev removed another relative of the republic's former president, Nursultan Nazarbayev. He released his nephew, the first deputy head of the National Security Committee (CBN), Lieutenant General Samat Abish.

This was announced on the president's official website. The reasons for the decision were not specified.

KNB chief Karim Massimov lost his position on 6 January. A little later, sources reported that Abish was arrested, but the information was not confirmed. Tokajev fired two other deputies of the KNB chief on January 9. He and Maksimov were detained on charges of treason. Former Deputy Energy Minister Zhumabay Karagayev and others involved in the unjustified increase in liquefied gas prices were recently detained. The measure provoked mass protests in the republic.

Nazarbayev's son-in-law Timur Kulibayev resigned on January 17 of his own accord. A few days earlier, Dimash Dosanov, Chairman of the Board of KazTransOil JSC, and Kairat Sharipbaev, Chairman of the Board of Directors of QazaqGaz National Company JSC, resigned. They are also Nazarayev's son-in-law.
