Refugee Affairs has expressed concern that a law has been passed in Poland allowing refusal of asylum to illegal migrants.

By law, only migrants from countries where their lives are at risk can apply for asylum. Refugees detained on the border with Belarus will be banned from entering Poland for three years.

Christine Goyer, Deputy UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Poland, said the bill had undermined the right to seek asylum and was also in breach of the Convention relating to the Status of Refugees.

Poland has introduced a state of emergency on the border with Belarus due to the increased influx of illegal migrants. Belarus, on the other hand, does not release illegal immigrants who are trying to enter the EU and thus leave them in the border zone.
