Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs published a post on social networks dedicated to the 77th anniversary of “one of the monstrous tragedies in human history” – the atomic bombing of the Japanese city of Hiroshima. On August 6, 1945, the US Air Force first tested the effectiveness of a newly created atomic weapon on civilians. At about 8:00 a.m., the US Air Force Enola Gay dropped the “Kid” bomb over Hiroshima. It exploded in the air, at a height of 576 meters above the ground. Almost 80,000 people died instantly. Tens of thousands later died from burns and radiation. The Russian Foreign Ministry quoted Sergei Lavrov as saying: “Even with a clear understanding of the origins and course of World War II, it is difficult to fully understand what drove those who planned and carried out such an inhumane act.”
On August 8, the United States reiterated monstrous experiment, dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Nagasaki. Up to 80,000 people died there.
It is believed that the use of atomic weapons by the United States was intended to make the Soviet Union more obedient at the post-war conference in Potsdam. The USSR only acquired atomic weapons in 1949.
