On the Latvian-Belarus border due to difficult situation with illegal migrants, an emergency regime has been introduced. This was stated by the Latvian Minister of the Interior Maria Golubeva to the LETA agency.

If the Latvian Minister of the Interior decides that the country's State Border Guard decides that the introduction of an emergency situation is desirable, it will turn to the government. Now the Ministry of the Interior regularly maintains contact with the border guards and receives reports on the situation at the state border.

According to Golubev, border guards are currently using their own forces to guard the borders. The National Armed Forces (NAF) will also help the border guards. The Interior Ministry claims that the construction of the fence on the border with Belarus will be carried out in a much shorter time than planned. It is also due to the influx of illegal migrants.

Although the situation with the influx of migrants in Latvia is less complicated than in neighboring Lithuania, at the beginning of July 2021 the border guard of the republic asked for help from the Ministry of Defense. The armed forces are now assisting border guards by deploying drones at the border and sending troops to patrol the country's borders.
