Italy plans to recognize the famine as a genocide of Ukrainians

Meeting of the President of Ukraine with the Prime Minister of Italy in Kyiv < p > The Italian authorities are planning to officially recognize the famine of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people. The corresponding draft resolution should be discussed in the country's parliament.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi announced this during a joint briefing with Italian Prime Minister George Meloni.

According to Zelenskyi, such recognition is very important for Ukraine , because this year will be 90 years since the tragedy.

“The Prime Minister informed me that yesterday the Committee for Foreign Affairs of the Parliament of the Republic already voted for it. important decision, now we hope that in the near future the corresponding resolution will be approved by the Italian parliament,” Zelenskyy said.

Note that according to demographers, the number of victims of the famine is from 3.5 to 5 million people, including direct excess mortality in the Ukrainian SSR is from 2.6 to 3.9 million people. In 2013, the M.V. Ptukha Institute of Demography and Social Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine held an international scientific conference “Famine in Ukraine in the first half of the 20th century: causes and results (1921-1923, 1932-1933, 1946-1947)”, where estimates were published demographic losses due to the famine of 1932-1933: the excessive number of deaths of the population of Ukraine amounted to 3 million 917.8 thousand people, Russia – 3 million 264.6 thousand people, Kazakhstan – 1 million 258.2 thousand people, in total in the entire USSR – 8 million 731.9 thousand people.
