Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to involve the UN and the ICRC in the evacuation of civilians from Azovstal. The Russian Foreign Ministry said the Kremlin was ready to consider UN initiatives to alleviate the suffering of the civilian population in Ukraine.

“Ready to consider concrete initiatives, including a UN initiative, to alleviate the suffering of the civilian population in the Special Operations Zone, if they really contribute to this noble goal,” Rus said. The foreign ministry said in a statement.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric said further discussions on the subject would take place between the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. .

Earlier, representatives of the Azov Regiment (recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation) said that civilians did not leave the power plant because they feared shelling when they tried to evacuate.
