Germany will help Finland develop a new armored personnel carrier

Germany signed an agreement to join led Finnish CAVS program to create a new 6X6.CAVS (Common Armored Vehicle System).

According to the Finnish armaments company Patria in a statement, a formal accession agreement should be concluded before the end of the year. Germany will be the fifth country to participate in the first phase of multinational cooperation.

Finland, Latvia and Estonia have been participating in the program since 2019, Sweden since 2021. Patria, as the supplier of the 6 × 6 vehicle platform, is responsible for developing the system within CAVS.

The joint program is open to other countries as well. Under the CAVS program, Latvia ordered more than 200 armored personnel carriers in August 2021, of which Patria has already delivered more than a dozen.

Finland signed a declaration of intent for 160 new armored personnel carriers in August 2021 and pre-series deliveries to Finland, as reported in June. Earlier this month, Sweden signed an agreement on product research and development phases.

“Patria 6×6 is a modular solution that can meet a wide range of needs,” said Hugo Vanbokrik, European Market Manager, Patria. The German interest in the CAVS program is further proof of the concept. Germany is currently looking for a successor to the Fuchs armored personnel carrier.
