Borrell called for the allocation of one billion euros for the purchase of weapons for Ukraine

According to Bloomberg, the European Union intends to develop a tripartite plan that will provide Ukraine with the necessary ammunition worth one billion euros. Josep Borrell, head of the EU's foreign policy department, proposed to allocate funds from the European Peace Fund for the purchase of 155mm artillery shells for Ukraine. EU defense ministers will discuss the issue at an informal meeting in Stockholm on March 7.

According to the document, Borrell offered EU countries a favorable cost recovery rate of up to 90% if the munitions were delivered by a certain date. He also pointed to the importance of joint procurement to ensure the supply of weapons to Ukraine and replenish the stocks of EU member states.

Supply of grenades to Ukraine will be discussed at a meeting between US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz this week. On the US side, they are urging their European allies to act more quickly. Estonia has also advocated that EU countries should invest around 4 billion euros in the joint purchase of 1 million grenades, raising the issue earlier this year.
