Washington Post reported that the US State Department insisted on imposing sanctions on Russia's Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project and Nord Stream 2 AG manager Matthias Waring, but Joe Biden refused because he was afraid to ruin relations with Germany.
According to Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, his deputy and Under-Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland, they were not opposed to sanctions aimed at blocking the project, without exception for the company's CEO.
Joe Biden and other high-ranking members of the National Security Council opposed the sanctions, saying they could destroy relations with Germany. It is clarified that at this point the project is already 90% completed, so the White House considers it a done deal. There is no point in threatening relations between the United States and Germany.
