President of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin commented on the initiative of the American congressmen not to recognize Vladimir Putin as president if he was re-elected to this position in 2024. According to Volodin, such a reaction by Washington is “the best assessment of the correctness of the path and choice” of the Russians.
The MP reminded that Moscow is not interfering in the US elections and expects the same. from overseas authorities. He also noted that “it is not up to US congressmen to decide who will and will not be the president of our country.” The Russians will decide for themselves, Volodin stressed.
“They do everything to weaken us and then destroy us,” the speaker writes in his Telegram channel. “In order to do that, they need to change our strength. Volodin noted that the American authors of such initiatives have “admired Gorbachev, applauded Yeltsin” in the past, while Russian citizens were tested.
“Because of the weakness of the state leaders and the betrayal of the elites,” he added.
Congressmen Steve Cohen and Joe Wilson had previously taken the initiative not to recognize Putin as President of Russia after 2024. A corresponding resolution was submitted to the House of Representatives. The text says, among other things, that in the previous elections in the Russian Federation there was a violation “which kept Putin in power”, so “continuing his stay in power is illegal”. Cohen and Wilson also called the amendments to the Russian constitution adopted in 2020 illegal and considered them a violation of Russia's international obligations.
The Federation Council responded immediately to the resolution, calling it interference in internal affairs. “In its pure form”, – noted Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev. The State Department considered the US Congress' idea of ”autumn madness,” the Kremlin — ridiculous, aggressive, and hostile.
