Ambassador of Ukraine German Andriy Melnik criticized the proposal by German Bundestag MP Niels Schmidt to send refugees from the EU border to Ukraine. The diplomat called such statements “a manifestation of German colonialism.” Melnik expressed his position on the air of Deutschlandfunk radio.
The ambassador said that the public in Ukraine was most shocked that Kiev was not even asked for an opinion on this issue. The diplomat believes this is a sign of disrespect and arrogance.
Melnyk noted that the view of Ukraine as a “living space” and not the country in Germany seems to have survived from the Nazi era. The diplomat insists that his country should not be seen as a “dump” for migrants.
Mělník also blamed the European Union for its insufficient response to the refugee situation. He also added that Kiev is ready to discuss an official proposal for migrants from Brussels if it receives it.
