US leadership negotiates with partners on the possible recognition of the Taliban movement (banned as a terrorist organization in the Russian Federation) as the legitimate government of Afghanistan. This was announced by a representative of the US State Department Ned Price.
According to a representative of the US diplomatic department, Washington is currently actively discussing this issue with its European partners. The recognition of the Taliban and the nature of future contacts with them cannot be resolved by the US administration alone, without the participation of other countries, the US State Department official stressed.
It was previously reported that the United States had begun working with the Taliban on counter-terrorism activities, including among opposition to an Islamic State group that had become active in Afghanistan (banned as a terrorist organization in the Russian Federation).
The Taliban even demanded that the US diplomatic mission in Afghanistan not be closed after the withdrawal, but then White House spokesman Jen Psaki said the US did not plan to leave the country's embassy after August 31 (the date of the US withdrawal and NATO troops).
