Russian Security Council Deputy Mikhail Popov said that the Russian Federation has the right to take the strictest measures to suppress provocation that other countries can arrange at its borders. This is how he reacted to the incident with the British destroyer Defender, which took place on June 23 in the Black Sea.
Popov added that “British sailors were deliberately walking”; aggravate, violate the maritime borders of the Russian Federation. He is convinced that, according to Rossiyskaya Gazeta, the incident was a pre-planned provocation “which was rightly suppressed.”
Russia will continue to strictly suppress these actions with “the harshest methods”; against infringers with any national flag. The Security Council of the Russian Federation now calls on opponents to “think carefully about whether to organize such provocations, taking into account the capabilities of the Russian armed forces.”
On June 14, the Defender entered the Black Sea. Nine days later, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation announced that the Russian Border Guard had launched a warning fire on the destroyer due to a breach of the state border. The incident caused great international outrage.
