Former Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida was elected the new chairman of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in the country. This happened after the results of the voting in the second round. That means he will become the next prime minister.
The previous Japanese prime minister was Yoshihide Suga. His mandate expired this year. He took office a year ago after Shinzo Abe's resignation. A parliamentary session approving Kishid as the new head of government is likely to take place on October 4.
The politician in the second round won 257 of 427 votes. His opponent, former Japanese Foreign and Defense Minister Taro Kono, had 170 votes.
Sanae Takaichi and Seiko Noda also took part in the election. Prior to that, they held several ministerial positions. In the first round, however, they did not get the required number of votes and dropped out of the race.
