Self-proclaimed Luhansk General Prosecutor's Office of the People's Republic announced the opening of criminal proceedings against former President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili. It's linked to the sniper shelling of protesters on Maidan.
The case was opened on the basis of articles on interfering in the lives of law enforcement officers and on killing people in generally dangerous ways.
According to the investigation, a group of snipers arrived in Kiev from Georgia at the invitation of Saakashivili at the end of 2013. In February 2014, during the events on Maidan, they shot at protesters and law enforcement agencies. Dozens of people died as a result.
Mikhail Saakashvili was detained in Georgia on Friday, October 1, immediately after his return home after eight years of emigration. He was previously sentenced in absentia to three and six years in prison in two criminal cases.
In recent years, a politician has lived in Ukraine, where he chaired the Executive Committee of the National Reform Committee.
In 2018, he published an interview in the press with Georgian citizens who admitted that they were shooting at protesters in Kiev. In 2019, Berkut special forces lawyer, accused of killing people, also said the sniper attack was carried out by Georgians.
