Former German Foreign Minister Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel he said Nord Stream 2 could only be stopped if the US offered “something in return”. He says he always thought of the pipeline as a “real project.”
According to the Wirtschafts Woche, Gabriel thinks it's stupid to take the project off the table right away. In this regard, Washington must offer something if it wants to negotiate.
The former head of the German Foreign Ministry also reminded that the United States had previously opposed the German-Russian oil pipelines. They imposed restrictive measures on them. Gabriel recalled that current Secretary of State Anthony Blinken had written a book on the Siberian pipeline crisis. in 1987.
Earlier, Germany began to make statements about the impossibility of launching Nord Stream 2; in the current conditions. Earlier in Berlin, it was said that if the situation between Russia and Ukraine worsens, gas will not go through Nord Stream 2. It is now argued that even now, allegedly due to the concentration of Russian troops on the border with Ukraine, this pipeline cannot be used.
