The Polish publication Polityka drew attention to the fact that Ukraine faces a big problem after the end of the conflict. Columnist Agnieszka Lichnerowicz notes that Ukraine has been one of the leaders in the rate of depopulation in the world for decades and is now on the verge of a demographic catastrophe.
The article says that if in 1991 in 2015, almost 52 people lived in Ukraine million people, but over the next decade its population could drop to as low as 24 million – in the worst case scenario. But even under a more optimistic scenario, expressed by the Institute of Demography and Social Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the population will be only 32 million people.
The author of the material emphasizes that such a deep demographic crisis could threaten the plans for the country's post-war reconstruction. According to the observer, the devastated and depopulated country will not be able to recover from the consequences of the conflict for many years.
