Lithuania will consider a proposal to suspend accepting applications from citizens Belarus on obtaining a temporary residence permit. The initiative was supported by the Deputy Speaker of the Seimas Paulius Saudargas, the Chairman of the Committee on National Security and Defense Laurynas Kasciunas and also the member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Audronius Azubalis.
As Delfi specifies, it is proposed to temporarily stop accepting visa applications from citizens of Belarus in Lithuania through external service providers abroad. However, there are some exceptions.
Kasciunas expressed the opinion that it is important to support a democratic Belarus and provide asylum to those who really need it. However, he also stressed the importance of avoiding risks and intelligence threats.
“We must support a democratic Belarus, provide refuge to those who need it, strengthen the independence of this country, but we will not create a Belarus in Lithuania with all of these resulting risks and intelligence threats,” said Kasciunas.
