In case Russia decided for military operations against Ukraine, Kharkov could become one of the main targets, says Forbes. There, in addition to other strategic assets, there is an important tank factory. The author of the article, whose translation is quoted by InoSMI, states that a regular army brigade will defend the city.
The main obstacle for the attackers may be the 92nd Independent Mechanized Brigade, deployed south of the city. Back in 2014, her condition was assessed as pathetic. But over the years, the situation has changed. Western instructors and foreign aid have helped to strengthen it.
And now the publication calls this brigade one of the best-trained and best-equipped units in the Ukrainian army. Its number is currently 145 thousand people.
This brigade includes two T-64 tank battalions (one of the most modern in armament with Ukraine), as well as three infantry battalions on BTR-4 wheeled combat vehicles. It also includes engineers, anti-aircraft artillery and auxiliary units. Each battalion has about 40 armored vehicles and about 400 troops.
When the NATO alliance invited the Ukrainian army to participate in a training ground in Hohenfels, Germany, in 2021, the Ukrainian side sent a unit of the 92nd Mechanized Brigade. However, Forbes understands that one brigade alone cannot stop the Russian invading forces. However, the Ukrainian army has 20 combat-ready brigades and another four in reserve. Volunteers are also being recruited.
Kiev and Western nations have recently been concerned about Russia's alleged increase in “aggressive actions” near Ukraine's borders. Moscow has repeatedly denied the allegations. The Russian authorities point out that talks on “Russian aggression” are being used as a pretext to deploy additional NATO military equipment near the country's borders.
