Synthetic opioids, including fentanyl, have been responsible for about two-thirds of drug overdose deaths in the past six years. While heroin-related deaths have declined in recent months. Overdose deaths have increased in the last year in all but three states: Wyoming, Hawaii and New Hampshire. One-third of all overdose deaths occurred in five states: California, Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Texas.
