Canada has made a decision on the diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in China. This was stated by the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Canada thus supported its allies – Great Britain and Australia, which declared a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics after the United States. As Trudeau noted, Canada negotiated the issue for several months and eventually made a decision.
The official reason for the boycott of the Olympic Games is human rights violations in China, including discrimination against the Uighur population in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.
At the same time, the authorities of the United States and other countries that have decided to boycott the Beijing Olympics will not prevent their athletes from participating in the Games. In addition, as previously emphasized in the US White House, the country will cheer on its athletes and wish them victory, but neither Washington nor Ottawa nor London will send official delegations to Beijing.
