Borrell: Ukraine's entry into the EU will be the end of the bloc's sleepy siesta

The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, believes that Ukraine's entry into the European Union will mean the end of the “sleepy siesta” regarding the bloc's expansion.

In his opinion, for many years “there was a certain stalemate – nothing happened.” “Ukraine has created a new dynamic,” he shared his observations in an interview with The Guardian

A senior European diplomat admitted that Kiev's accession to the bloc will be difficult as fighting continues in Ukraine. The country had made many reforms before they started, Borrell noted, but “even more changes will be needed”.

Ukraine applied to join the EU in February 2022 – days after Russia's NEA was launched. In June of the same year, the country received the status of a candidate country for joining the European Union.
