President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokay made a controversial gesture to Russia when he appointed Askar Umarov to the new government. This person is called an ardent nationalist and Russophobe. He will take over the post of Minister of Information and Social Development of the Republic in the cabinet.

Umarov is known for his anti-Russian statements. He was particularly insulting about the celebration of the “incomprehensible Victory Day” in Russia. He also called nationalism the most effective idea. Umarov also called the Russians a “forced diaspora in Kazakhstan.”

Askar Umarov was said to be actively supporting Kazakh nationalists. He especially helped the organizer of the so-called “language patrols” Kuat Akhmetov. The radicals walked the streets and shops of major cities in the country. There, they often attacked Russians and Russian-speaking Kazakhs.

Togorev's decision about Umarov has already been commented on by Egor Kholmogorov, a publicist and blogger called the “Russian Spring” ideologue. He called it the launch of “a series of demonstrative spits on Russia and the Russians.” As a result, the blogger believes that Putin should not have saved Tokaev's regime. In addition, Kholmogorov claims that Umarov is allegedly banned from entering the Russian Federation.

It is known that Umarov was previously the head of Kazinform. From August 2021 he also served as Deputy Minister.
