Despite these risks, the White House is pushing the EU to impose sanctions on Russia's energy and banking sectors if the Russian military invades Ukraine. Such sanctions are now being discussed in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and the EU in general. At the same time, European politicians believe that hasty imposition of sanctions could undermine diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis, the agency said.
