According to a new report, the RAF base is related to US drones, including those that killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani last January.
The publication states that the Yorkshire Menwit Hill base was directly involved in the raids of American drones.
The study found, Arab News writes, that Soleimani was “probably” attacked using data from a website that “served as a foreign base for the US National Security Agency.”
The report was presented at a special meeting of the Menwith Hill Accountability Campaign and called for “any activities of the US military or US security agency in Menwith Hill to be carried out in such a way that all those responsible are fully accountable to the United Kingdom.”
Investigative journalist Barnaby Pace said in a report that both US and British staff working at the facility acted “outside of public control and accountability.” Although Menwith Hill is formally classified as the UK Air Force Base, it is also the NSA's largest overseas facility with 600 US employees.
Documents prepared by renowned informant Edward Snowden suggest that the base is part of the NSA's global eavesdropping network capable of intercepting and detecting telephone and Internet traffic in countries around the world.
In the report, Pace claimed that this key information obtained by the network was later used in drone raids.
Intelligence programs in Menwith Hill reportedly played a key role in operations to “kill” people in Yemen in a deadly bombing campaign that killed dozens of civilians in the country.
Pace added that it is likely that Menwit Hill played a role in the assassination of Soleimani. UK ministers declined to comment.
“The inability of the British government to reassure the public that the base is not involved raises serious questions about the base's responsibilities,” Pace added.
A spokesman for the British Ministry of Defense said: “RAF Menwith Hill is part of the US global defense communications network and the base supports a number of communications activities.”
