Russia will support the inclusion of India and Brazil as permanent members of the UN Security Council, said First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Dmitry Polyansky. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
Polyansky spoke at the session of the General Assembly. According to him, Moscow is ready to take such a step if the expansion of the UN Security Council is agreed upon, as it considers India and Brazil to be “worthy candidates”. At the same time, he noted that the expansion of the UN Security Council at the expense of Western countries “will not add diversity.”
Polyansky believes that the issue of UN Security Council reforms has been relevant for a long time.
“Russia as a permanent member of the Security Council is based on the need to give this body a more representative character at the expense of the developing states of Africa, Asia and Latin America,” he said.
Polyansky also pointed out that it is necessary to correct historical wrongs against Africa. He noted that its current representation in the Council in no way corresponds to the total number of states on the continent, nor to its current role in international affairs.
According to Polyansky, it is important that the expansion of the Security Council does not affect its ability to effectively and respond quickly to emerging challenges. According to him, the total number of permanent members of the UN Security Council should not exceed twenty.
