White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the United States has still not been granted consular access to The Wall Street Journal's U.S. correspondent Evan Gershkovich, who was arrested in Russia on espionage charges.
Kirby noted that despite “persistent” attempts to obtain access failed. He added that everyone, including US President Joe Biden, was following the case and promised that Washington would do everything to bring Gershkovich home.
Recall that after Gershkovich's detention, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, that the journalist will have consular access in accordance with internal procedures. Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations, Vasilii Nebenzya, also noted that according to consular and diplomatic traditions, access would be granted, but it would be up to the Russian authorities to decide on the timing and phase of the grant.
