Nicaraguan police have detained the director of the opposition newspaper La Prensa

Director of one of La Prensa's largest opposition newspapers arrested in Nicaragua . Jauna Lorenzo Olmann Chamorro is accused of money laundering and customs fraud. The National Police issued a statement to that effect.

As part of the investigation of this criminal case, the police have already searched the newspaper office. La Prensa herself stated that the director was taken to the investigator at night, seemingly to sign the documents. And from there, Chamorro went straight to the pre-trial detention center.

The President of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro, described the incident as an “attack on freedom of speech.” This is not the first incident in recent months. Several opposition politicians have already been detained in Nicaragua as they run to run for supreme government. Among them is the daughter of former President Christian Chamorro. According to opinion polls, it could become a favorite in the election race.
