Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova spoke via video link at the World Congress of Compatriots Living Abroad. Her performance began with an incident – the broadcast did not want to start due to a technical problem. “We will assume that this problem was caused by our enemies,” joked Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko, who leads the second part of the forum. After a snag, the connection with Zakhar was re-established.

According to her, the negative reaction to the Russian world in Western countries is “good” because it shows that Russia is going in the right direction.

“It is perfectly normal for the modern world that the Russian world causes a negative reaction from the very forces that have practically declared a crusade against our country. I mean not only modern Russia, but the sum of all our traditions, culture, achievements – all this causes anger, “says Zakharova.

She noted that Western countries were trying to interfere in Russia's internal affairs and that some journalists abroad had been persecuted.

Maria Zakharova also recalled an archive of British writings that was “released” in February, suggesting that London supports the work of independent publications in Russia, including Mediazona (recognized by the media agent) and Medusa (recognized as media-foreign agent). According to Zacharova, these media “deal with the misinformation of the population” and work to undermine Russia's authority. “How long does it take to rewind a string … you know the continuation of this proverb,” she threatened.
