Embassy in Israel Berlin reacted sharply to the words of the ambassador of Ukraine in Germany Andriy Melnyk about the leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN, banned in Russia) Stepan Bander. Diplomatic missions on Twitter emphasized that the Ukrainian ambassador's statement is a distortion of historical facts, “a vulgarization of the Holocaust and an insult to those killed by Bandera and his people.”

The message also notes that Melnyk's statement undermines universal values, as well as “the courageous struggle of the Ukrainian people to live in a world according to democratic values.”

Earlier in an interview with journalist Tipo Jung from Germany, where the glorification of Nazism is prohibited by law, Ukrainian Ambassador to Berlin Andriy Melnyk began glorifying Nazi accomplice Stepan Bandera as a “freedom fighter”. And Mělník said that Bandera is not subject to any laws. He compared him to Robin Hood, who “is revered by us all” and at the same time “also acted against the law”. At the same time, the ambassador claimed that Bandera had no ties to Nazi Germany. And he explained the mass killing of peaceful Poles by Ukrainian nationalists in Volhynia and Galicia during World War II by saying that “there were many murders and atrocities” on the other side as well. Ukraine's Foreign Ministry later called its ambassador's statement about Bander a personal opinion.
