President of Germany Frank – Walter Steinmeier gave German Chancellor Angela Merkel an official announcement of his resignation as Prime Minister. Merkel is now in the status of interim chancellor.
Steinmeier called the period of Merkel's chancellery one of the greatest in the history of modern Germany. Merkel herself was sitting in a corner, she could tell she was worried. The incumbent chancellor took the resignation document and stepped aside, but Steinmeier reminded us: we still have to pose for the press. The prime minister smiled and posed a little.
Angela Merkel has served as German Chancellor since 22 November 2005 for sixteen years.
