The Swedish authorities agreed on the extradition of a Turkish citizen. This is the first time since Ankara demanded the extradition of some people by Stockholm in exchange for Sweden's agreement to join NATO.

This is a man who was sentenced to 14 years in prison in Turkey on the charges. of bank card fraud in 2013 and 2016, Swedish Justice Minister Morgan Johansson told Reuters.

At the same time, a man detained in Sweden last year said he was unjustly convicted in Turkey for converting to Christianity , and also refused military service and has Kurdish roots. It is not yet known whether this person was included in the list of persons whose extradition Turkey requested.

On May 18, Sweden and Finland submitted a request to the NATO Secretary General to join the bloc. However, Turkey has blocked the start of the process of assessing these applications. Ankara was particularly unhappy that the two Scandinavian countries allegedly harbored members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), banned in Turkey.

However, on June 29, Ankara, Helsinki and Stockholm signed a security memorandum, taking into account all the concerns of the Turkish authorities . As part of the deal, Turkey has provided a list of people it is seeking extradition. Ankara therefore withdrew its objections to the entry of both Scandinavian countries into NATO.
