Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the ceremony opening of the monument to Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky in the Pskov region. The memorial is called “Alexander Nevsky with his retinue”. Putin stressed that the historic victory showed that after the invasion of the invaders, Russia was not defeated and remained able to repel the enemy.

Alexander Nevsky and his platoon defended Novgorod and Pskov, and therefore all of Russia. “This victory has become one of the symbols of Russia's military glory,” Putin said. The prince lived in the most difficult period of national history, when enemy invasions passed through almost all principalities. Alexander Nevsky and his warriors defeated the Swedes on the Neva, returned the captured Koporya and defeated the knights on Lake Peipsi.

“This victory was decisive, halting the enemy's advance and showing everyone in the West and in the East that Russia's power had not been broken and that there were people in Russia who were ready to fight for it without saving themselves.” Putin said.

The event was also attended by Patriarch Kirill from Moscow and all of Russia, who consecrated the monument.

The opening of the monument is dedicated to the 800th anniversary of the birth of Prince Alexander Nevsky. The sculptor is Vitaly Shanov, architects Konstantin Fomin and Dmitry Smirnov. The weight of the monument exceeds 50 tons.
