Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko pardoned Russian citizen Sofya Sapega, who was sentenced to 6 years in prison on charges of running the opposition Telegram channel
The friend's pardon was announced by the governor of Primorye, where Sapega was born, Oleg Kozhemyako. According to the official, the girl was handed over to delegations from the region.
“You are a free man today. I hope you have learned from your youth and will not make such mistakes again,” Kozhemyako told Sapie at the meeting.

Late last year, it emerged that Sapieh's request for clemency had been rejected, despite Lukashenko saying he felt sorry for her. Earlier this year, it was announced that a Russian woman was being prepared to be extradited to her homeland to serve a sentence in Russia.
Last month, a pardon was announced for Roman Protašević, the former editor-in-chief of the opposition TV channel Nexta, who was detained in Minsk together with Sapieha after the forced landing of a Ryanair plane in May 2021. In May of this year, the court sent Protašević to prison for 9 years, but soon the former opposition figure was released and personally thanked Lukashenko for this. In comments, representatives of the Belarusian opposition repeatedly expressed the opinion that Protaševič actively cooperated with the investigation. He is also known to have married an unknown girl during the investigation, despite being considered a close friend of Sapieha at the time of his detention.
